The playmates understand this song; little Amelia does too. The student understands it too — because he himself composed this song. He even says that this song is wonderful. Only Mrs. Malle doesn't understand it. However she has already jumped over the fence of childhood.

This amusing piece first appeared in "Children's Picture Book" published on November 15th 1871 in Copenhagen. This was one of the last few children's stories written by Hans Christian Andersen before his death in 1885 (at age 70). It shows that although Andersen was approaching the end of his life his "childishness" had not yet faded away."Only Mrs.Malle doesn't understand it," "but however she had jumped over the fence of childhood." But Andersen's heart remained forever in childhood.
