河马一早醒来，照了镜子，突然不高兴了：“这张嘴怎么这么大呀？真丑死了！”河马的心情就像他的嘴巴一样，一下子低落得很厉害。他连早饭都不想吃，就向野地里走去，躲开了一些朋友。前面是一条清澈的小溪，河马慢慢地走下去，将自己浸在水中，然后游过水流，不经意间漂到了一座孤独的小岛上。
小岛上空无一人，没有一棵树，也没有多余的草，只有寂静和河马自己的呼吸声。“我这样丑陋，这样的生活倒也挺适合我。”河马叹息着。
