"Du Shi's Poem: The Going Away"
A poem of a small crowd, with a touch of drama:
The eagle on the arm, after one meal it spreads its wings and flies away. How can one become like the swallows in the palace halls, clinging to mud and enduring the heat? A wild man roams freely without any pretence; how can he remain among kings and nobles for long? I have not yet tried eating jade from my pouch; tomorrow I will enter Blue Mountain.
In this poem by Du Fu (712-770), we see him reflecting on power and fame. He uses the scene of falconry to liken those who are free-spirited to birds that soar into freedom once they've had their fill. They don't stay bound by worldly desires like those who chase after wealth and status.
"The eagle on the arm, after one meal it spreads its wings and flies away," is a vivid image that captures both drama and an attitude towards life - when conditions are ripe, take bold steps without being held back by materialistic temptations.
"How can one become like the swallows in palace halls?" Here "swallows" symbolize lowly people "clinging to mud," which represents them chasing after power while neglecting their true selves. This sight pains Du Fu deeply as he sees how dull such lives must be - only attached to high-ranking officials could they maintain these artificial positions.
This piece reflects Du Fu's disapproval of societal norms where individuals are more concerned with appearances than personal growth or happiness. It highlights his longing for a simpler way of life where nature is respected rather than exploited for personal gain or prestige.
Through this poem, we see how Du Fu values individuality over conformity to societal expectations. His words express his deep frustration at seeing people settle for mediocrity instead of striving for self-improvement.
Du Shi's poetry has been widely admired since ancient times due to its rich imagery, powerful emotions expressed through simple language.
His poems often focus on themes related to politics
