Wu Mengju was a scholar from Shimen County, Zhejiang Province during the Qing Dynasty. He came from a wealthy family with vast landholdings and held the official position of middle-level civil servant in the Imperial Secretariat. However, he lacked one thing: the elixir of immortality.

Mengju heard that Suzhou celebrated "Gods' Day" on April 8th every year, where gods would descend to earth to observe human affairs. People eagerly sought to catch a glimpse of these divine beings, but none had ever succeeded in seeing them up close. Instead, they used local proverbs like "Seeing gods without recognizing them; enjoying wealth for three thousand years" as a form of good luck.

Undeterred by this reality, Mengju decided to visit Suzhou himself on Gods' Day. He brought four loyal guards with him and entered the bustling streets filled with various vendors and performers selling their wares or performing acrobatics.

As Mengju wandered through streets and alleys without noticing time passing by until he reached Ba Bridge (Eight Mile Bridge). Just then an impoverished beggar carrying a broken bamboo cane approached him while holding his breath into a copper coin emitting "puffing" sounds. The beggar's appearance captivated Mengju who kept staring at him intently before suddenly realizing something profound within his mind - he quickly bowed deeply towards the beggar as if paying respects to someone important.

The beggar returned his bow and asked how did you recognize me? Introducing himself as Lyu Dongbin (the legendary Chinese god), he spoke:

I have lived in Suzhou for decades yet no one knows I am divine,

Only Wu Mengju recognizes I'm not meant for immortality,

In heaven's realm we cherish simplicity,

Do not covet power or wealth!
